Police - Web Security

“I work in a small town police department. I maintain the inter-office computer system and created the website for the department. On the site we post city safety news, events, court dates, and other important information about what’s going on in the town. I installed a web security program that I thought would keep the site safe from hackers. However, shortly after putting the site up, I logged on to see the site was defaced. There were dirty images that had been altered to show the heads of our mayor and chief of police. Obviously, this was a huge security breach. I called the security company and they explained that their software only detects vulnerabilities to my system, scanning it every 24 hrs, but can’t actually stop a hacker from getting into the site.

The company said that fixing any vulnerabilities found was my responsibility, but I’m not a security person and I felt that they had claimed to be able to fix any security problems for me. I canceled their service and began another search online for LIVE site security protection. I found SecureLive.net which offered constant protection in real-time. I got on live chat with a representative and they assured me the site would always be protected. The rep even told me they could clean up the hacks on my site to ensure there were no “back doors” for hackers to get into. After getting the funds approved, (which was easy because SecureLive was more affordable than our old service), I gave them the go-ahead to clean up the site and install the SecureLive protection. Our site was back up in perfect working order the next day and we haven’t had a single hack since.”
